The 3 Benefits of Doing Core Energetics Therapy… And How It Can Help You Heal From Trauma

“What kind of therapy do you do?”

That’s one of the most common questions I get.

When I say, “Core Energetics Therapy,” their next question is almost always, “What’s that?!”

They’re very curious about what happens in a Core Energetics body-based therapy session.

Some people have heard great things. Most people have never heard of Core Energetics or even Body-Centered Therapy or Somatic Therapy at all.

So I thought it would be a good idea to share the three main benefits my clients consistently get when doing Core Energetics therapy with me.

Let’s get started with benefit #1, shall we?

1. Become More Self Aware

Many people grew up in dysfunctional homes. 

As pre-teens, this dysfunction became “normal.”

Then as adults, these “normal” beliefs about how a household should function became reality.

This is why there are millions of people dealing with marital, family, and substance abuse problems.

These past experiences create your current beliefs.

These beliefs can begin when you’re in the womb… and all the way into seven years of age.

So, if you never question what happened to you during those formative years, those childhood memories become your reality as an adult. 

And if you truly believe what happened to you was “normal,” then your life will probably reflect the experience you endured. 

For example… 

Let’s say you want to go for a job that pays double the money you’re making right now. 

But you notice you feel insecure about whether or not you’re good enough to do the job. (This is super common.)

This negative self-talk likely originated from a specific event in your past.

Maybe when you were young, you brought home a report card with all A-minuses on it…

But when you showed it to your parents, they asked why you didn’t get all A-pluses. 

Maybe your experience was less subtle than that. 

Either way, at that moment, the seed of self-doubt was sown. 

Fast forward to the present…

Now, the self-doubt manifests into negative self talk like, “I don’t know enough to do the new job well.” 

And all this can happen unconsciously. You might not even know why you’re engaging in negative self-talk.

It often happens deep within your subconscious mind.

In the early stages of Core Energetics therapy sessions, I help you become aware of these subconscious (or conscious) negative patterns.

And I’ll help you break down old thought patterns so that new, healthier ones can emerge… so you can get back into the “driver’s seat” of your life.

And how do we make this happen?

That’s benefit number two is all about…

2. Transform The Way You Think About Your Past

Often, people think they are partly or completely broken… 

And because they had a turbulent past, they are damaged beyond repair.

If you think this way, you’re not broken and you’re not beyond repair. 

You are simply living your life as a “process.” Which means you’re always transforming.

In a Core Energetics session, I help you make subtle changes to your beliefs about your past… so you can move through traumatic events and come out the other side calmer, happier, and healthier.  

One of the ways I’ll help you do this is to catch those negative thought loops and create affirmative language.

For example…

If you often find yourself saying things like, “I can’t figure this out” or “I should know more”…

I help you create affirmations that are more supportive, compassionate, and kind. 

If you can transform your perspective and the language you use about your past… 

You’ll quickly realize you can have the life that you’ve always wanted for yourself.

But here’s the thing… 

It’s difficult to change the way you think about your past all by yourself. 

You’ll need help navigating your emotions when new information comes to light.

I’ll help you gather the missing information that’ll give you the tools you need to achieve exactly what you want in life. 

Ok, now on to the third biggest benefit of doing Core and other Somatic Body-Centered Therapy…

3. Release YEARS of Stored Anger and Return to Homeostasis… Which Means More Calm, Balance, and Inner Peace

I believe depression is anger turned inward.

If you suffer from depression, you might actually be angry. 

And it’s possible you’ll never even know you’re angry…

Because all you can feel when you’re depressed is emptiness, fatigue, and lack of motivation. 

But when you dig a little deeper into your life stories, you’ll find anger bubbling under the surface. 

When you do Core Energetics, you have an opportunity to release anger by detaching it from a particular person, topic, or event.

You are less likely to change emotions that are attached to experiences.

For example…

Many men have repressed anger toward their father. 

Sometimes the father is absent. Sometimes their father is present, but emotionally unavailable. 

As a child, a lot of boys become resentful of their fathers for not showing them love. The kids miss out on much needed positive affirmation, touch, and uninterrupted bonding time.

Then, the resentment towards their father transforms into anger. 

And since many boys aren’t shown how to properly express anger, they hide it deep inside.

Then, over many years the anger gets stuck like gum underneath a desk…

And it transforms into depression.

These men are still attached to a particular event that led them down the path towards anger… then eventually, depression. 

It’s possible that the event happened when they were very young. 

In Core Energetics, I help you strip away the attachment to the story so you can release years of stored anger.

Because here’s the thing…

Anger is simply an emotion. 

It’s not the story itself. 

So all anger wants to do is be released… and it doesn’t care how.

The way to release anger in a Core Energetics somatic therapy session?


One of the ways we release anger in a session is by smashing a baseball bat into a foam cube.

But simply moving energy out of your body is more like a mini-benefit. 

The major benefit here is that when you release stuck anger, your body returns to its happy place: 


When your body is in homeostasis, it is balanced.

And when your body is balanced, many wonderful things happen inside…

Your heart rate goes down, cholesterol levels can start to drop, and your digestion can improve (not to mention the many other other health benefits).
